IVES-SCHUMAN Variations on America  •  BERNSTEIN Serenade for Violin, Harp, Percussion and Strings, Jun Iwasaki, violin • HANSON Symphony No. 3

Bernstein’s lyrical and high-spirited contribution to the violin solo repertoire was inspired by a reading of Plato’s recounting of guests at a party making speeches about love. PYP and Jun Iwasaki, Concertmaster of the Oregon Symphony, will express the moods for the different speakers. Beginning with Ives’ original take on “My Country ‘tis of Thee” and ending with Hanson’s dramatic symphony, PYP will start its season in bold red, white and blue.

The year 2011 will mark the 100th anniversary of the premiere of Petrushka by the Ballet Russe in Paris. Based on Russian folk tales and music, this work cemented Stravinsky’s reputation as the greatest young composer of his time. The atmosphere is pure carnival, with virtuoso turns and leaps on every page. Brahms’ Tragic Overture is a masterpiece of tremendous emotional range. Add to that a performance by the winner of PYP’s annual Concerto Competition and it will be difficult to pick your favorite part of this concert.
